— Ellis Heating & Air

Repair It When It Makes Sense.
Replace It When It Does Not.

We don't push replacements on equipment that can be fixed safely and affordably. Ellis considers equipment age, failure history, repair cost, and your home goals to provide balanced guidance.

Repair May Make Sense When:

Preserving reliable existing equipment
  • Equipment is under 10–12 years old and generally well-maintained.
  • The repair cost is minor relative to the overall value of the system.
  • This is an isolated component failure (like a capacitor or fan motor).
  • The system has provided consistent, quiet comfort without major issues.
  • You plan to remain in your home for only a short period.

Replacement May Make Sense When:

Upgrading aging or unsafe systems
  • Equipment is over 12–15 years old and experiencing frequent breakdowns.
  • Major failure occurs (cracked heat exchanger or failed compressor).
  • System relies on phased-out, expensive R-22 refrigerant.
  • Cumulative repair costs exceed 50% of a modern high-efficiency upgrade.
  • Soaring summer/winter utility bills due to degraded SEER2/AFUE efficiency.

Not Sure Which Route Is Best For Your Home?

We will inspect your unit and walk you through every option with complete transparency.

What Local Homeowners Say About Ellis

Recent Google reviews from homeowners across the Greater Sacramento region.

Adam at Ellis Air is great! He’s installed 2 systems for us — our previous home and our new home. We’ve recommend him to all our friends and neighbors! Rare to find such responsive service and fair pricing!

Outstanding HVAC Service – Highly Recommend Adam Ellis! I highly recommend Adam Ellis for anyone needing HVAC or heating and air conditioning services. Adam installed my new HVAC system in 2022, and the entire experience was excellent from start to finish. He was knowledgeable, professional, and took the time to make sure everything was installed correctly. In July 2026, Adam returned to perform routine maintenance and ensure my system was running at peak performance. Once again, he was prompt, thorough, and honest. He carefully inspected everything, answered my questions, and gave me confidence that my system is operating efficiently and reliably. It’s hard to find someone who consistently provides this level of professionalism, quality workmanship, and customer care. I truly appreciate Adam’s commitment to standing behind his work long after the installation. If you’re looking for an HVAC technician you can trust, I wholeheartedly recommend Adam Ellis. You won’t be disappointed!

Adam and his team are top notch. I had 5 quotes for new units, and Ellis stood out amongst the group. My old set up was complicated, and they were not in a desirable location. The salesperson asked for a second appointment so Adam, the installer, could help solution how to best install the units. I was thrilled with Adam’s idea to move the units from next to my pool to the roof of the garage. The old set up made it so loud when we were trying to enjoy some time outback. Adam created custom stands for the units, and when he installed them he thoughtfully put the largest unit furthest from the house to minimize noise. When I needed a service repair, they promptly responded and quickly addressed a warranty repair.

Adam and his team were exceptionally knowledgeable, kind, thorough, and reasonable throughout the entire process to diagnose and replace our faulty HVAC unit. Adam has worked on many other units from family and friends and his reputation is well-earned. You can 100% trust that they will do a great job at a reasonable price and be a pleasure to work with. Adam and his team were great to work with. Adam patiently answered all of our questions, took the time to understand what we wanted in a new system, and recommended a system that perfectly suits our needs. The team was professional and took every care to keep our house protected and clean during the installation. The new system is super quiet - a huge upgrade over the system the home builder installed and the price including installation beat almost every other estimate we got. Highly recommend!

HVAC Answers for Homeowners

Straightforward answers to the most common heating, air conditioning, pricing, and replacement questions we receive from Greater Sacramento homeowners.

How much does an HVAC diagnostic cost?

An HVAC diagnostic from Ellis Heating & Air costs a flat $59 service fee. We inspect your heating or air conditioning system, identify the exact mechanical or electrical root cause, and provide a clear, upfront repair quote before any work begins.

Unlike companies with high trip fees or hidden add-ons, our $59 diagnostic fee covers thorough troubleshooting by an experienced owner-operator.

Is the diagnostic fee waived with repair?

Yes, the $59 diagnostic fee is completely waived whenever you approve a repair with Ellis Heating & Air. You only pay for the repair work itself—there are no separate trip fees or double charges.

If you decide not to proceed with a repair after the diagnosis, you simply pay the transparent $59 diagnostic fee for the evaluation.

Are replacement consultations free?

Yes, replacement consultations are 100% free for homeowners considering replacing an existing heating or cooling system. We visit your home, calculate sizing requirements, inspect ductwork, and present clear equipment and efficiency options with no sales pressure.

You will receive a written proposal outlining total installation costs, equipment options, manufacturer warranties, and available financing options.

What should I check before calling for AC repair?

Before requesting service, check these four common issues: 1) Verify your thermostat has fresh batteries and is set to 'Cool' with the temperature set below room temperature. 2) Ensure your air filter is clean and unblocked. 3) Check your electrical panel to see if the AC breaker tripped. 4) Confirm the outdoor disconnect switch is turned on.

If these basic checks do not restore cooling, call Ellis Heating & Air at (916) 467-0231 for a $59 diagnostic visit.

When should an HVAC system be repaired instead of replaced?

Repairing makes sense when your HVAC system is under 10–12 years old, the repair cost is a small fraction of a new system, the unit has been well-maintained, and it previously cooled or heated your home reliably without excessive utility costs.

We evaluate safety, overall component condition, age, and remaining lifespan to give you honest guidance on whether a repair is your best financial value.

When does replacement make more sense?

Replacement makes more sense when your HVAC equipment is over 12–15 years old, uses outdated R-22 refrigerant, faces a major component failure (like a failed compressor or cracked heat exchanger), or requires frequent, cumulative repairs that exceed 50% of the replacement value.

Upgrading to a modern high-efficiency system can also lower monthly energy bills and eliminate persistent comfort and noise problems.

How often should an HVAC system be maintained?

Your HVAC system should be maintained twice per year: once in the spring for your air conditioner and once in the autumn for your furnace or heating system. Regular tune-ups preserve efficiency, prevent unexpected seasonal breakdowns, and protect manufacturer warranty coverage.

Routine filter changes every 1 to 3 months are also recommended to ensure healthy indoor air quality and proper system airflow.

Do you help with SMUD heat pump rebates?

Yes. Ellis Heating & Air participates in the SMUD Contractor Network. Qualifying SMUD customers may receive up to $3,000 on a gas-to-electric variable-stage heat pump, up to $2,000 on a qualifying two-stage gas-to-electric system, $1,000 on an electric-to-electric multi-stage upgrade, and up to $2,000 more for a qualifying Go Electric panel upgrade.

Rebates require qualifying equipment, an active SMUD account, and program funding. We review eligibility during your free replacement consultation and can submit the SMUD rebate application for you. Customers outside SMUD territory (for example Roseville Electric or PG&E) may have different utility programs.
